Ace Auto Trim Passes the Torch to Longtime Employee

Congrats to Ace Auto Trim and Ace Canvas & Upholstery in West Bend, Wisconsin, for accomplishing what many aging small businesses struggle with — passing the torch to a new owner and operator.

Lawrence Stehling founded Ace Auto Trim nearly 60 years ago and eventually passed it on to his son Lee Stehling and wife Sandy. Now they’re passing it onto longtime employee Samantha Bilda.

“By age two, in my family, you were pulling staples,” Lee told Washington County Insider. “It was a family thing, and back then it all was mainly auto trim, and that was my brother and dad, and they were so good at it…. I just never was that good.”

The shop eventually took on furniture and marine upholstery, where Lee found his calling.

“They started the boats and then Sandy and I got married, and they thought, well, let’s see if he can handle this, because he sure sucks at cars,” Lee joked. “I just loved it, and it worked.”

But after decades of blood, sweat and tears, it’s time to let the next generation take over, Lee said.

“I’m getting to the end of the run now, and I just want to thank the community for everything they’ve done for us. We couldn’t have made it without the love and support we’ve received here. It’s been an incredible journey,” he said.

Lee and Sandy’s 35-year-old protégé, Samantha, will be taking over the small business in 2025.

“It will be the same quality work people are used to… probably better,” Lee said. “I taught her myself.”

We wish Lee and Sandy lots of happiness and great health in their next chapter, and Samantha loads of success in hers.
