The Hog Ring - Trimmer Larry Layton Potts Dies at 85

Trimmer Larry Layton Potts of Colorado Springs, Colorado, has died at age 85.

Larry was born on March 23, 1939 in Royston, Texas, and graduated from McCaulley High School in 1957.

He spent his childhood working on the family farm, but after graduation pursued a career in auto upholstery. Initially, he moved to Midland, Texas, where he worked for Bill Morrison of Morrison Seat Covers. However, his career was interrupted when he was drafted into the U.S. Army in November of 1961. After completing his service in March of 1964, he returned to Morrison Seat Covers, where he continued to learn the craft.

In 1967, Larry moved to Colorado Springs, where he worked for Bob Beach at Custom Auto Trim. After working there for about 3 years, he bought the business, which he successfully ran until December of 2012.

“He was an expert at the interior restoration of custom cars and served clients from multiple states because of his reputation of being the best in the business,” his obituary says. “After 44 years of being a master of his craft of auto upholstery in Colorado Springs, his health required him to stop working at a job he truly enjoyed.”

Outside of the shop, Larry enjoyed going to car shows, grabbing breakfast with his buddies, playing cards and spending loads of quality time with his children and grandchildren.

Sadly, he died on March 13, 2025. He is survived by his children, Lisabeth Rea and Lari Hanenberg; Stepdaughter, Charlah Love; grandchildren, Tawny Rea, Jade Buresh, McKala Ramos, Taysia Sevene, Mindy Gibson, Carly Hanenberg and Cody Sevene; great-granddaughter, Aerith Ramos; sibling, Earnest “Mickey” Potts; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

May he Rest in Peace.
