Leather has always been a high-end product — but this is ridiculous.
Greek police just busted a smuggling ring that was importing cocaine-infused leather hides from Bolivia. The leather was saturated with cocaine, dried with salt, and packed into shipping containers headed for Greece. Once it landed, the smugglers set up shop in Athens with a dedicated lab to extract the drugs from the hides.
According to Reuters, authorities — tipped off by the DEA — had them under surveillance for months before making their move.
When cops raided the lab, they found more than 800 kilos of coke (that’s over 1,700 pounds!), stuffed into 300 salt-packed bundles.
The group included nationals from Bolivia and Spain, and at least eleven people are now facing charges.
The wildest part? This isn’t even Greece’s first fabric-based drug bust of the year. Back in May, they caught another crew soaking clothing in liquid cocaine. First shirts, now hides. What next — Alcantara?
It’s unclear if any cocaine-infused leather made it to other countries. But if you find yourself upholstering straight through the night, you might want to check if your hide came from Bolivia.
