Bridge of Weir’s New Foam Could Redefine Premium Interiors

March 10, 2026 By Naseem Muaddi

The Hog Ring - Bridge of Weir's New Foam Could Redefine Premium Interiors

Seat foam isn’t exactly glamorous. Most people don’t think about what’s under their seat covers until they start falling apart. But Bridge of Weir is hoping their new foam, BioPRO, changes that.

BioPRO is a next-generation seat foam made for premium vehicles, and what makes it interesting isn’t just what it can do, but what it’s made from. About 20% of the foam is made from protein recovered from Bridge of Weir’s own leather manufacturing process. That means less reliance on fossil-based chemicals and no need for some of the additives traditional foams rely on, like melamine or PFAS.

Bride of Weir says BioPRO isn’t just comfortable, but lighter than most foams, naturally fire-resistant, and fully recoverable at the end of a vehicle’s lifecycle — basically, everything you’d want in a luxury seat.

James Muirhead, Bridge of Weir’s Chief Commercial Officer, says the new foam represents a step forward in the company’s work to make vehicle interiors more sustainable without sacrificing quality or comfort.

“For decades, we have been proud to support our automotive partners as they work to reduce the environmental impact of their interiors,” Muirhead said in a press release. “BioPRO is the next step in that journey. It reflects years of commitment from our innovation team and a shared ambition with our customers to move away from fossil‑derived content while maintaining the quality and comfort they expect.”

Of course, BioPRO isn’t just eco-friendly, it’s also designed to work. Because each piece is moulded precisely to the seat it’s going into, designers can tune the comfort exactly where it’s needed, and engineers can be confident the foam will hold up over years of use, Bridge of Weir says. And, unlike traditional foams that rely on chemicals for flame resistance, BioPRO’s natural properties give it about 60% better burn resistance than the competition. What’s more, BioPro is really light — starting at just 47 kilograms per cubic meter — which helps with fuel efficiency and even EV range.

It’s not yet clear when BioPRO will make its way into cars, but we’re excited for it.

Seat foam might not get the spotlight in the cabin, but it has a huge impact on how a car feels, lasts, and even performs. BioPRO shows that innovation in automotive interiors isn’t always about flash surfaces. Sometimes the biggest improvements happen quietly, under the seat.
