Headliners Will Soon Be Video Screens

The Hog Ring - Headliners Will Soon Be Video Screens

Harman International just unveiled a range of innovative electronics designed to improve the audio and visual experience of vehicle passengers — including a new, state-of-the-art headliner called MoodRoof.

Harman, which is owned by South Korean electronics giant Samsung, debuted MoodRoof at the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Nevada.

MoodRoof employs QLED technology to project visual landscapes onto a vehicle’s headliner. When matched with music, it creates atmospheres that influences or enhance occupants’ moods.

Essentially, Harmon has transformed an ordinary headliner board into a video screen.

MoodRoof is designed for self-driving cars, in which passengers can recline their seats and stare at the roof without fear of distraction. It’s part of Harman’s new Moodscape package, which includes Music Motivator and Personal Audio Alerts technology.

According to Harman, the goal is to provide ultimate comfort and relaxation by setting the perfect mood.

“Automakers are placing an increasing emphasis on the vehicle interior as a place for reflection and focus in response to growing consumer interest in wellness and lifestyle optimization,” Harman explains. “In step with this trend, HARMAN’s Moodscape uses mood-based features to redefine comfort and entertainment in the daily commute.”

With self-driving cars not yet in production, it may be sometime before MoodRoof becomes available to the public. However, we can definitely envision a future where headliners are transformed into screens — if not to set the mood, then definitely to watch movies.
