How to Create Aluminum Trim Moldings

March 29, 2019 By Naseem Muaddi

The Hog Ring - How to Create Aluminum Trim Moldings

Want to learn how to create custom aluminum trim moldings? Watch this video by master trimmer Juan Estrada of Interiors by RMD Garage.

Juan, who creates gorgeous interiors for the award-winning shop, outlines the process in four steps:

  1. Measure and cut
  2. Tap and install screws
  3. Sand and buff
  4. Install

The video is loaded with useful tips — including what grit sandpaper and polish to use for a mirror finish, and what size drill bits and hardware to use to attach the trim.

In the end, Juan transforms a raw bar of aluminum into show-quality, polished trim.

I wish he had mentioned where you can get half round bar like that. Also, what was the plastic the panel was made out of?

You can find it online at Clayton or on ebay at Backwater Interiors, in different lengths and shapes. Clayton’s is roughly 1/4 inch in height and width whereas Backwater’s is slightly wider than its 1/4 height, which may better replace existing damaged trim. Additionally, Backwater’s trim is pre-drilled for screws which come with it. Hope this helps

His work is great. I can not imagine what he is charging per panel He is in the upholstery business for the love of the art not the money. As business owner I would loss my shirt taking that long to do one piece of chrome on one door panel!

MUCH cheaper. Cut to size, polish and mount. Used it myself in my custom Galaxie.
